Okay, everyone—now it’s your turn to weigh in. Last week I talked about some of my favorite Black-owned restaurants around the US…now I’d love to hear from you!
So start thinking about that while you read through a few responses from our discussion last time. A few of you clearly know your way around Northern Spain! Mostly what I can see is that you guys love the wines of the region, like Albariño and Txakoli—me too, of course. Other than that, a few great recommendations in Galicia from community members Ellen and Jeff:
Ellen G had this to say:
Highly recommend Pampin in Santiago de Campostela and Silabario in Vigo which has a great Sherry list as well as food. I’ve loved every Fulcro Albariño I’ve had as well.
And Jeff L gave a few more recommendations in Vigo, a city on the far west coast of Spain in the region of Galicia.
Maruja Limon in Vigo is one of the best restaurants I have ever dined at... worthy of a second Michelin star.
Malauva Wine Bar in Vigo is small, brilliant and one of the most approachable places to sample the wines of Galicia, Ribera and the rest of the world... utterly captivating!
The bar at the hotel Palacio Universal makes outstanding gintonicas with Nordes (Galician) gin and bay leaves as a garnish!
Don't forget to see Jules Verne while you are there!
Jeff! Good callout on the Jules Verne sculpture, one of the most memorable things to see in Vigo. Jules Verne set part of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in Vigo, so a few decades ago the city installed a bronze sculpture of the author sitting on top of an octopus!
Okay, now is the assignment for this week. Back to the United States, what are your favorite Black-owned restaurants, cafés, bars, and beyond? Last week we visited Houston, Wilmington, Chicago, New Orleans, and more…where should we go this week?
The Edge (theedgeharlem.com) is tucked away in a corner of Harlem, which gives the place a special vibe. Owned by two sisters, the Edge has a menu that fuses English and Jamaican dishes. Here in Charlottesville, Virginia, we recommend Soul, just off the Downtown Mall.
Burdell in Oakland is simply superb! It is a relatively new restaurant in the Temescal district, serving up Chef Geoff Davis' menu of highly creative but deeply satisfying dishes. It is his interpretation of soul food, which he states is informed by the meals he had at his grandparents table as a youth. These dishes defy expectations--some are riffs on classic soul food staples, but most are personal takes on things that challenge and reward the diner.
For us, this is a special new restaurant in St Louis, Rated Test Kitchen. It is tasting menu reservation only spot in downtown with the coolest 22 year old chef/owner we've seen in a long time, Juwan Rice. The menu is varied and sourced seasonally, but the octopus reminded me of my favorite Jaleo dish.
Nolia in Cincinnati Ohio. Great vibe, amazing people and excellent food. Whether you’re there for a “fancy” night out or come for fried chicken and po boys at Sunday Supper you will not be disappointed. https://noliakitchen.com/

We absolutely love Leah and Louise. https://www.leahandlouise.com/ So very, very, very good and easily belongs at the top of any best restaurant list.
Saucy Mama's in Guerneville, Ca. Generous and mouth watering portions of the food Yvette grew up with.
Red Rooster
